WHERE WE ARE: ORBETELLO ITS LAGOON AND ARGENTARIO. THE LAND AND THE SEA, THE ART AND THE HISTORY IN THE TUSCAN MAREMMA
Orbetello is on the southernmost strip of the Tuscany 's Maremma. It's in the centre of a splendid coastal lagoon.
The aerial photo of the town illustrates its distinct geographic conformation and harmony.
This unique wealth of landscapes are all within cycling distance of Orbetello: the WWF Nature Reserves and the “wetlands” around the Lagoon , the Maremma National Park , the Argentario promontory and the two strips of sand known by the Tuscan name of “Tomboli”.
These are called Feniglia and Giannella , and enclose the lagoon and then open out onto the surrounding Tyrrhenian Sea with their long golden beaches.
The Feniglia Dune, stretching 6.2 km to the south east of Orbetello, is a Nature Reserve with age-old pines and Mediterranean scrub. It is crisscrossed with pathways that can be explored by bike or on foot. It is the ideal place for those who enjoy open-air sports like swimming, windsurfing, running and cycling.
It's also a great place to watch aquatic bird species and the other animals that populate the dunes.
THE ARGENTARIO COAST:
Beyond the town of Orbetello lies the Argentario Promontory linked to the Tuscan coastline by two strips of sand dunes. A scenic road winds up the rocky coast, offering view after breathtaking view of the craggy limestone cliffs completely covered in Mediterranean scrub, that fall straight down to the sea bed. The gentle slopes lead to the numerous little havens and beaches, surrounded by their emerald waters.
There are many boats and ferries that will take you from Mount Argentario to the islands of Giglio and Giannutri in under an hour. Nearby are the other islands of the archipelago and the coastline of the Maremma National Park . This area, with its sea mammal sanctuary , has been established as a Marine Nature Reserve and is a true paradise for lovers of the sea.
These are the destinations for some of the excursions included in our general Italian language and culture courses open to all students studying at the school. The services of a guide are included in the course fee.
